The researcher of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB, Josep Manel Carrasco, joins the team of the local television programme Fet a Mida with a fortnightly scientific dissemination section.

After many years of sending messages into outer space, have we received any response? What is the probability of receiving a signal or response from another planet? Francesca Figueras Siñol, astrophysicist and researcher at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB (ICCUB) delves into this great question in the Catalan radio program La Nit dels Ignorants of Catalunya Ràdio last Wednesday, September 14.

Bits of interplanetary dust and rock hit Earth all the time. Most of these are harmless and burn up in our planet’s atmosphere. Occasionally, some bigger objects make it through, causing local damage or, in extreme cases, massive devastation. But with the right technology and knowledge of asteroids’ orbits, scientists can anticipate and prevent an impact by defecting an asteroid just enough to avoid a collision.

The Institute of Cosmos Sciences will attend the XVI UB Trade Fair next Wednesday, May 4th, among one hundred other companies. The philosophy of this event is to foster knowledge transfer and lower the barrier between academia and industry to tackle the challenges of our society.
