The Faulkes Telescope Project was established to inspire young students to study and take part in real science. The Faulkes Telescope Project provides over 1000 hours per year observing time on robotic telescopes, including two, 2-metre astronomical telescopes, one on the island of Maui in Hawaii (Faulkes Telescope North) and the other at Siding Spring in Australia (Faulkes Telescope South). The telescope time is freely available via the Internet to schools in the UK and provides 'live' astronomical observing direct from the classroom, or queued observations. The telescopes were originally funded by the DFET but are now are owned and maintained by Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT).
Can you imagine being able to observe any region of our sky using one of the largest and most modern telescopes located in Hawaii? Or remotely control astronomical telescopes in Australia, South-Africa or Chile? This and more is what the students that participate in the Faulkes Telescope project can do. Led by their teachers, the students access the global telescope network Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) to perform professional astornomical observations. Through astronomy, the students work on multidisciplinar skills such as mathematics, physics, computer sciences, english, team work or cooperation.
The main objective of this project is to inspire young students to actively participate in real scientific and astronomical projects.
