The Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) is joining the celebrations of the Scientific Culture Day next Wednesday, September 28th, 2022.

This day aims to highlight the importance of scientific culture in society today. Our present faces giant challenges such as climate change, the search for green energies or the prevention of new pandemics and  a society with a strong scientific culture is essential and key.

The date September 28 was chosen to commemorate the first broadcast of Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" television series, one of the most influential outreach programs in the history of scientific communication.

The Institute of Cosmos Sciences, brings you two activities to spread science and critical thinking and together build a better society:

WORKSHOP: "QUANTUM MECHANICS SIMULATIONS"

In recent years research in Quantum Technologies is receiving a strong boost worldwide. These technologies will allow in the not too distant future to use complex aspects of quantum mechanics to improve our computing capacity, to solve complex problems or even to improve our communications.

With this activity, discover the most surprising phenomena of quantum mechanics such as the tunnel effect, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle or the double slit experiment, by playing with our simulations of quantum systems.

By Bruno Juliá (ICCUB)

When? Wednesday, September 28

• First session at 1pm

• Second session at 4pm (priority for the students of the University of Experience)

Where? Classroom A03I, Faculty of Physics, UB

Free entry, limited places

ROUND TABLE: "COSMOLOGY AND THE EQUATIONS THAT GOVERN THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE"

This year marks the centenary of the publication of Friedmann's equations, a set of mathematical expressions that describe the expansion of a homogeneous (equal at every point) and isotropic (behaving the same in all directions) Universe, very similar to ours.

In this round table we will discuss the physical implications of this discovery, as well as its history and context.

Speakers Licia Verde (ICREA-ICCUB), Ana Climent (ICCUB), Quim Llorens (ICCUB)

Moderator Roberto Emparan (ICREA-ICCUB)

When? Wednesday 28 September at 2pm

Where? Eduard Fontserè Room, Faculty of Physics of the UB

Free entry, limited places
