The astronomer of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB-IEEC) Carme Jordi will offer the conference "A new way of seeing the Universe with Gaia" next Thursday, May 25, on the occasion of the opening of the EINSTEIN RACAB 2023 exhibition at the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona.

TALK: "A NEW WAY OF SEEING THE UNIVERSE WITH GAY"

At the beginning of the 20th century, the discovery of the existence of galaxies and the publication of the theory of General Relativity completely changed the conception that was held of the Universe. A century later, the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite provides us with a valuable tool to observe and understand this Universe, from the solar system to distant galaxies, through our own Milky Way. Never before have we had at our disposal such diverse and precise data for nearly 2 billion stars. Their positions, motions, distances and physical properties are a treasure trove for uncovering the past history of our Galaxy and its interaction with neighbouring galaxies. In this talk we will explain the Gaia mission and its impact on the knowledge of the Universe.

Gaia has proven to be a powerful tool providing very precise astrometry and photometry in the first releases of the mission (see Gaia DR2 and Gaia DR1). The third release and beyond (find here the current release scenario planning) will include some calibrated spectrophotometric data.
