Our astronomer Xavi Luri participates in the science section of the morning show "Són 4 dies" on the RNE 4 radio station, commenting on the science behind some of the most famous films about space, such as "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Gravity", or "Space Cowboys". Which are the most accurate ones? What scientific "disasters" appear?
Among the films they mention, there are scientifically accurate, and others that are not so close to reality. Luri talks, among others, about "2001: A Space Odyssey", based on the ideas of science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke. Luri says, "We have not managed to do everything that appears in the film yet. The film correctly shows many scientific achievements and concepts, for example a base on the moon that we wish we could have made".
Xavier Luri is a professor at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Barcelona, and director of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences. He is part of Gaia's research group at the ICCUB, where he researches on the processing and analysis of Gaia's data, and also on the design and implementation of mission archive operations.
