Researchers from the Gaia group at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB (ICCUB) are taking part in the organization of the 1st Latin American Gaia School that will take place in hybrid format at the University of Antioquia (Colombia) from February 7 to February 11, 2022.

Besides collaborating with the organizing committee, two researchers of the group, Xavi Luri and Josep Manel Carrasco, are invited lecturers to the school and will give the talk “Astrometry and Photometry with Gaia: positions, parallaxes, peculiar motions and magnitudes”.

The main objective of the school is to provide students with the basic concepts of the Gaia mission as well as with the necessary tools to scientifically exploit its data, which is expected to be released this year 2022 with the Gaia Data Release 3.

The school will take place in a hybrid format between the 7th and the 11th of February, 2022. The theory sessions will be online and the hands-on sessions will take place both in person in Medellín and online.

We strongly encourage you all to join the school so you can learn the analysis techniques that will allow you to handle de DR3 data. You can register to the school by filling out the following form.

The Gaia mission

Gaia is a satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) that measures positions, velocities, parallaxes and other physical properties of more than 2 billion objects in our Galaxy and nearby galaxies. The precision of the measurements and the epic proportion of observed objects have revolutionized our vision of the Galaxy. The expectation of the international community before the new data set (Gaia DR3), which will include millions of stellar spectra Is, therefore, huge.
