On Monday, September 15, 2025, at 7:00 PM, a roundtable dedicated to the figure of Maria Assumpció Català i Poch, a Catalan mathematician and astronomer, will take place at the Pere i Joan Coromines Hall of the Institute of Catalan Studies (c. del Carme, 47, Barcelona).
The event is part of the commemorative activities of the Maria Assumpció Català i Poch Year, declared by the Government of the Generalitat on the occasion of the centenary of her birth.
Maria Assumpció Català was the first woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Barcelona and the first to hold a professional position as an astronomer at a university in Spain. She was an active member of the Catalan Mathematical Society and the Catalan Society for the History of Science and Technology.
The award for the best doctoral thesis in mathematics granted by the Science and Technology Section of the IEC bears her name.
The roundtable will be moderated by Carme Jordi Nebot, a member of the IEC, and will feature contributions from Gerard Gómez Muntané (University of Barcelona and Catalan Mathematical Society), Roser Puig Aguilar (University of Barcelona and Catalan Society for the History of Science and Technology), Salvador José Ribas Rubio (Montsec Astronomical Park and Catalan Society of Physics) and Ramon Català Pou, representing the family.
The event will conclude with a speech by Sònia Guerra López, president of the Catalan Institute for Women.
